MILWAUKEE –– Runners and walkers who participate in the “German Fest Twilight Run/Walk to Help Feed Milwaukee’s Hungry,” Thursday, July 22, will benefit St. Ben’s Community Meal, a Capuchin ministry that feeds Milwaukee’s homeless, the charity of choice for the 5K run/walk for five years. Usinger’s will also donate two pounds of product directly to St. Ben’s Community Meal for each registered participant.

Capuchin Friar Dave Schwab, executive director of St. Ben’s Community Meal, said many people are unaware that hunger is more an issue in the summer months. “St. Ben’s Community Meal is grateful to German Fest in helping us make the community aware of Milwaukee’s hungry and homeless,” he said of the program that feeds 2,000 meals each week to the homeless and chronically poor. “This run makes a big difference in people’s lives.”

The certified run, which begins at the north gate of the Summerfest grounds, starts at 7 p.m., is chip-timed and offers awards in 13 age categories. The two-mile, non-competitive, timed walk will take place on a separate course in Lakeshore State Park. Registration is $25 for the 5K run or $20 for the two-mile walk until the pre-registration deadline July 15, but walk-up registrations are welcome on the evening of the race. Fees include entrance into German Fest, a $5 food/drink gift card, a two-for-one coupon to return to German Fest on another day during the weekend, a commemorative T-shirt (sizes cannot be guaranteed after July 15) and participation in a post-event drawing for prizes. There will also be fireworks and special prizes for participating children and teams.
