New doctor to be in the house: Pope Benedict XVI announced Aug. 20 that he will name St. John of Avila as the 34th doctor of the church on a yet-to-be-determined date. This is the second “of Avila” person to reach doctor status. St. Teresa was so designated in 1970, and was the first woman to receive that honor.
Bishops, Brewers & Brats: When he signed on last March to help your Catholic Herald host its tailgate party, he was Fr. Don Hying. Thanks to Pope Benedict XVI, he became a bishop, and in the meantime Archbishop Jerome E. Listecki got on board with the promotion and thus, “Bishops, Brewers & Brats,” the name given to the event by my brother, Daryl — was born.
