Maryangela Román, managing editor, Catholic HeraldMaryangela Román, managing editor of your Milwaukee Catholic Herald, earned a first place award from the Catholic Press Association for best editorial in a diocesan paper, circulation 17,001-40,000 at a ceremony held June 24 in Pittsburgh.
The editorial, “The 4-year-old who taught us about life, love,” appeared in the March 25, 2010, issue of Parenting. It dealt with the death of Torian Thompson-Carter, 4, one of the victims of the Feb. 26, 2010, quadruple homicide in Milwaukee.
In awarding it first place, judges said, “This sad editorial puts a human face on urban violence. It does not offer global solutions. But it is honest. And, by bringing one precious four-year-old child back to life for a few moments, it gets the reader to ponder along with the writer how to protect other precious children from the urban maelstrom.”
