padreMarch Madness began in the Milwaukee Archdiocese at the 54th annual Padre Serra tournament last weekend and St. Eugene, Fox Point, pulled off an early upset. On March 1 the boys beat Brookfield Academy, 39-33 and on March 4 they upset number one seed, St. Charles, Burlington, 39-35. Their next game is against Lumen Christi, Mequon, on March 10 at 2:30 p.m. All games are played at Mount Mary College, Milwaukee.

“We haven’t had a number eight beat a number one in a really long time,” Bob Roloff, Padre Serra selection committee member, said. “The big floor is really a balance factor.”

University School, Milwaukee, beat John Paul II Academy, Racine, 33-31. The second close game was between Christ King, Milwaukee, who defeated St. Mary Springs, Fond du Lac, 24-22.

Number three seed overall Holy Apostles, New Berlin, beat St. Leo/St. Rose, Milwaukee, 42-21 and moves on to play St. Jerome, Oconomowoc, who defeated St. Joseph, Wauwatosa, 44-34. That game will be Saturday, March 10 at 10 a.m.

On March 1, St. Alphonsus, Greendale, defeated St. Mary, Burlington, 43-27, but lost on March 3 to the number four seed, Waukesha Catholic School System, 53-29.

St. Mary, Elm Grove, defeated Holy Angels, West Bend, and will play tournament favorite St. Catherine, Racine, on March 9 at 7:45 p.m. University School will play number two seed St. Dominic, Brookfield, on March 8 at 8:45 p.m.

The girls had their share of drama as well. On March 2, St. Charles, Hartland, upset Holy Angels, West Bend, 21-20. The next day St. Mary, Elm Grove, upset St. Leonard, Muskego, 27-23.

On March 2, Christ King, Wauwatosa, beat St. Jerome, Oconomowoc, 34-28 to move on to face number one seed St. Alphonsus, Greendale, on March 11 at 2:15 p.m.

St. John Vianney, Brookfield, defeated St. Catherine, Racine, 20-18 and will play St. Matthias on March 10 at 4:45 p.m.

St. John the Baptist, Plymouth, defeated Eastbrook Academy, 28-21 on March 4 and will play Our Lady of Grace/St. Lucy, Racine, on March 11.

St. Joseph, Kenosha, downed St. Joseph, Grafton, 38-14 and will play St. Dominic, Brookfield, on March 10.
