ST. FRANCIS — The names of priests and a layman appointed by Archbishop Jerome E. Listecki to serve at parishes in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee are listed on Page 3. Following are explanations of some of the terms used with those appointments.

In solidum team. The pastoral care of a parish, or of a number of parishes together, can be entrusted to several priests jointly in what is called an in solidum team. One of the priests is to be the moderator of the pastoral care exercised by the team. This moderator is to direct their joint action and to be responsible for it to the bishop.

Parish director; supervising priest; assisting priest. If there is a shortage of priests, a deacon, or some other person who is not a priest, can be entrusted with a share in the exercise of the pastoral care of a parish. There is no consistent use of terminology for this person; the Archdiocese of Milwaukee uses the term “parish director.”

When a parish director is appointed, there must also be a priest appointed who, while not the pastor, has the powers and faculties of a pastor and supervises the pastoral care offered by the parish director. The Archdiocese of Milwaukee uses the term “supervising priest” for this individual.

Since a parish director is not a priest, the full sacramental care of a parish is not possible without a priest to assist the parish director by providing sacramental ministry. The Archdiocese of Milwaukee uses the term “assisting priest” for this individual.

Pastor. The pastor is the shepherd of the parish entrusted to him. He exercises the pastoral care of the community entrusted to him under the authority of the diocesan bishop, in whose ministry of Christ he is called to share, so that for the parish community he may carry out the offices of teaching, sanctifying and ruling with the cooperation of other priests or deacons and with the assistance of lay members of Christ’s faithful.

Associate pastor. To provide for pastoral care of the parish, one or more additional priests can be joined with the pastor as associate pastors. They serve as co-workers with the pastor and share in his concern for the faithful entrusted to their care. An associate pastor may be appointed either to help in exercising the entire pastoral ministry, whether in the whole parish or in a part of it or for a particular group of the faithful within it, or even to help in carrying out a specific ministry in a number of parishes at the same time.

Archbishop Jerome E. Listecki, in consultation with the Priest Placement Board of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, has appointed the following priests for ministry in the archdiocese. The appointments are effective June 22, 2010, unless otherwise listed.
