MILWAUKEE — Seven elementary schools and one high school in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee were among those helping to collect the warmth as part of the seventh annual Caps4Kids collection of new caps, gloves and mittens.

Held during October and the first two weeks of November, the collection culminated with “The Biggest Warmer” weigh-in, featuring Cindy Huber of radio station Big Buck Country 106.9 and Bishop Donald J. Hying, at St. Vincent Pallotti Church, Milwaukee, on Saturday, Nov. 12. More than 300 pounds of new caps, gloves and mittens were collected there, and at several retail outlets in the Milwaukee area – Heavenly Kidzz, Children’s Orchard, New to You Kids! and select Walmart stores.
Participating schools were All Saints School, Kenosha, which topped the collection with 97 pounds of new caps, gloves and mittens; St Vincent Pallotti School, Milwaukee, brought in 67 pounds; and St. Martin of Tours School, Franklin, collected 36.5 pounds.
Other schools participating were St. Thomas More High School, Milwaukee; St. John the Evangelist School, Greenfield; St. Paul School, Genesee Depot; St. John Kanty School, Milwaukee; and Mary Queen of Saints Catholic Academy, West Allis.
The caps, gloves and mittens have been and are being distributed by St. Vincent de Paul conferences throughout Milwaukee County and at the St. Vincent de Paul meal sites in Milwaukee.
For the first six years, Caps4Kids was conducted as a joint venture of your Catholic Herald and the Milwaukee Council of the St. Vincent de Paul Society. This year, the paper and the Vincentians extended the partnership to include the Pallottine Fathers and Brothers and Big Buck Country 106.9.
In addition to the caps, gloves and mittens, the St. Vincent de Paul Society has raised more than $2,500 that will be used to purchase caps, gloves and mittens for children.
