MILWAUKEE — Scott Appleby, professor of history at the University of Notre Dame, will present “Church and Age, Unite,” at the Milwaukee Athletic Club on Wednesday, Sept. 26, 7:15 to 9 a.m.

His presentation is part of Cardinal Stritch University’s breakfast lecture series, “Forums on Faith and Work.”
Appleby, the John M. Regan Jr. Director of the Joan B. Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies, is a historian who studies religion in the modern period, focusing on the roles of religious actors in conflict and on the history of modern Roman Catholicism.
Author of “Church and Age Unite! The Modernist Impulse in American Catholicism,” his is also author or editor of three volumes on Catholicism after the Second Vatican Council: “Being Right: Conservative Catholics in America,” “Transforming Parish Ministry: The Changing Roles of Clergy, Laity, and Women Religious” and “Catholics in the American Century.”
His essays and articles have appeared in Foreign Policy, Harvard Theological Review, Journal of American History, The New York Review of Books, The New York Times Book Review, American Journal of Education, America, Commonweal and U.S. Catholic Historian.
Appleby also has appeared regularly in national and international media. In 2002, he was one of two lay Catholics invited to address the U.S. Catholic Bishops Conference during the sexual abuse crisis. He holds three honorary doctorates, from Fordham University, the University of Scranton and St. John’s University, Collegeville, Minn.
