Faith based on action of Holy Trinity

Based on Ex 34:4b-6, 8-9; 2 Cor 13:11-13; Jn 3:16-18

This Sunday we celebrate the feast of the Most Holy Trinity – the central mystery of our faith and a beautiful mystery of love.

The readings speak of the love and promises of God for us. Our faith is based on the saving action of the Holy Trinity: God the Father created the universe and as his children we call him “Father.”

He sent Jesus, his Son, to rescue us from sin. Through Jesus’ life, death and Resurrection, we can enjoy eternal happiness with him in heaven.

God the Holy Spirit leads us in truth, through the Scriptures and church teaching, and fills us with courage and grace to live our faith and inspires us to share God’s love with others.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that “God’s very being is love. By sending his only Son and the Spirit of Love in the fullness of time, God has revealed his innermost secret: God himself is an eternal exchange of love, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and he has destined us to share in that exchange” (CCC #221).

One way to recall the Trinity is by the Sign of the Cross. We should remember to make the Sign of the Cross slowly and thoughtfully. When we do, we are asking God to be with us as we pray or as we begin the Mass. During Mass, we should pay close attention to the Eucharistic Prayer. We should listen closely to the words addressed to the Holy Spirit prior to the priest saying the words of consecration that change the bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Jesus – it is a powerful Holy Spirit moment!

At the end of Mass, we are given a blessing and are sent forth to proclaim and live the Gospel. How? (1) By promoting life in a culture of terror and death. (2) By safeguarding each person’s dignity, caring for the poor, the needy and the vulnerable. (3) By promoting the common good with love for others in a world exhibiting indifference, antagonism and, sometimes, even hatred.

It really is about love – love of God, love of neighbor.
