Archbishop Jeffrey S. Grob celebrated a bilingual Mass on Sunday, Oct. 4, at St. Francis of Assisi Parish, Milwaukee, marking the feast of St. Francis of Assisi and the 800th anniversary year of his death.

The celebration included a ritual recalling the Transitus of St. Francis, commemorating his passage from earthly life to eternal life. A Franciscan habit placed on the ground and surrounded by candles symbolized the saint’s embrace of poverty and humility, even at the moment of death.

The 13th-century saint, an example of simplicity, peace and service, continues to inspire the Franciscan tradition. A community reception followed the Mass.
