Congratulations to those in the academic world who have finished, or are about to finish the fall semester. One more semester down; and time for a needed break. I am ready for it as much as anybody.
However, during this free time you should not stop reading…you should read the books you want to, not the ones assigned by professors, or those necessary to properly write a paper or prepare a presentation. Now, everybody’s choice of books to read is different. Right now I am reading “A Life Wild and Perilous,” a history book on the mountain men and fur traders in the American West. I enjoy history books, especially medieval or ancient and the American West, fantasy novels, some religious books (The ones where it does not get overly philosophical – I am not good with that) and also westerns. I’m sure that all of those don’t appeal to most people. Including my wife. Rachel is working her way through “Watership Down.” (I recommended it to her; she might not like it as much as I do)
This is where the library comes in. We have a little bit of everything for you. Although we don’t have the strongest fiction collection, we definitely have the classics. Obviously our strength is our religious materials, and if you enjoy reading those types of books, any kind, we can help you. However our history collection is rather good, especially local history. Interested on increasing your knowledge of the humanities, or even law? We have those for you. Want to learn about science and religion, not science vs. religion, we have plenty of books here.
And if you want to take a break and watch a movie or so, we can also help you there with our ever-expanding DVD collection. So come in, check out a book or movie from us, and over the holiday break, when you’re not spending time with family, catch up on your own reading interests.
Also a reminder that Salzmann Library will be closed from Friday, Dec. 21 until Tuesday, Jan. 1 for the Christmas and New Year’s Holidays.
